None of the books I read or websites visited answered all my questions, in fact some of them just led to more questions. The big grey area seemed to be the right amount of preload on the pinion bearings. Original service bulletins are vague about this and later restoration manuals mention torque figures in inch pounds. Someone must have sat an old mechanic down and converted his “feel” into a mathematical figure.
